Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) Technology November 29, 2011 at 9:32 pm
Some websites, such as those with online shopping services, deal with a lot of confidential information. To protect the identity and privacy of clients, these websites need to have SSL Technology as part of their hosting packages.
SSL is the acronym for Secure Sockets Layer. SSL is a cryptographic protocol that provides communication security over the Internet. To work, SSL encrypts the segments of network connections using asymmetric cryptography for privacy and a keyed message authentication code to ensure message reliability. Several versions of this protocol are used in various applications such as web browsing, email, instant messaging and voice-over-IP (VoIP) and a host of other activities that are done over the internet.
Secure Sockets Layer was developed by Netscape in order to safely transmit private documents through the Internet. SSL uses a system with two keys to encrypt data − a public key known to everyone, and a private key known only to the message recipient. Websites with SSL connections start with https: instead of just http and they often display the SSL logo on their page.
Websites that regularly handle confidential client information, such as credit card numbers and addresses, should be on a host provider that also offers SSL solutions. One way to check the reliability of a host provider’s SSL protocol is by reading web hosting reviews.
Web hosting reviews, such as Host Gator Review, are independently run web sites that provide unbiased ratings on a host’s products and services. Apart from star ratings, review sites also publish impartial feedback and comments from the host’s past and/or present clients. Web host reviews are readily available on the internet and can be accessed by anyone at any time.
